Lady Tigers' Defense Dominates in 31-22 Win Over La Plata

Cali Holt

On those nights when the shots aren't falling it sure is nice to be able to count on your defense. The Lady Tigers had one of those nights Thursday versus La Plata. SCR-I struggled to get anything going on the perimeter, but while their outside shots were not falling, Scotland County was getting the job done on defense.

La Plata was held without a field goal in the final period as Scotland County held on for a 31-22 victory in Memphis.

SCR-I's defense was particularly stingy at the end of both halves. The Lady Tigers held La Plata to just four points in the second quarter, to build a 19-10 lead at the intermission.

They repeated the defensive show in the fourth period, holding the Lady Bulldogs to just two free throws.

SCR-I got the offense going early on. Cali Holt opened the game with a three pointer and Megan Creek followed with a steal and layup to make the score 5-2. Jessica Morrow had a pair of buckets in the paint to push the lead to 9-4. But SCR-I cooled off and added just a free throw in the final four minutes to lead 10-6.

The second period started with a similar run. Creek scored on an offensive rebound and Kiley Frazier sank a pair of free throws. After Holt made 1 of 2 free throws, she scored on an offensive rebound. Morrow capped off the second quarter with a jumper from the corner to put SCR-I ahead 19-10.

La Plata opened the third period with a 7-0 run, forcing Coach Jaryt Hunziker to burn a timeout with 4:21 on the clock.

Morrow scored in the paint but La Plata cut the deficit to 21-19 before Hailey Dial canned a key three pointer. Frazier hit a pair of free throws to help push the lead back to 26-20 at the end of the three periods of play.

Neither team could buy a bucket in the first four minutes of the final period. Cali Holt made a pair of free throws at the 4:19 mark to break the scoring drought. She added another from the charity stripe but it was SCR-I's defense that sealed the deal in the 31-22 win.

Morrow finished with 10 points to lead Scotland County (12-7) in scoring. Holt added nine points. La Plata's leading scorer, Rachel Shahan, was limited to eight points as the Lady Bulldogs dropped to 14-5 on the season.
