Tigers Blank Canton 4-0 in Baseball Season Opener

The Scotland County baseball team opened the 2012 season with an impressive 4-0 victory at Canton on March 20th.

Senior Ben Shannan picked up the win on the mound, shutting out the other Tigers to open the year 1-0.

"Believe it or not, Ben didn't have his best stuff," said coach Daniel Burns. "He struggled with his command, but he still had a no-hitter through five innings."

That should be a scary thought for Tigers opponents, as Burns said he expects Shannan to only get better as the season moves forward and he finds his groove with his command.

The bottom of the Tigers lineup picked up the team's offense as several first-year starters contributed.

"Our 6-9 hitters did the job against Canton," Burns stated. "Going into the year, you would have thought the bottom of the order was where our question marks would be. If those guys continue to contribute like that, we know the guys hitting in front of them are capable of putting up some big numbers."

Freshman Jacob Blessing went 2-3 with a pair of RBIs. Shannan helped his own cause, going 1-3 with an RBI.

On the mound, the senior surrendered just two hits and struck out 12 while walking six batters in seven innings of work.
