Tigers Pound Putnam County 19-2 to Claim Conference Crown

Brock Bondurant is all smiles as he leads off second base. The senior got his first game-action of the season on Monday in Unionville after missing the first 13 games while recovering from shoulder surgery. Bondurant was 2-2 at the plate as the team's designated hitter.

Scotland County secured its second consecutive Tri-Rivers Conference baseball crown in impressive fashion on Monday night in Unionville. The Tigers pounded Putnam County 19-2 in five innings to finish a perfect 5-0 in the TRC.

SCR-I set the tone in the top of the first inning, sending 11 batters to the plate en route to a 7-0 lead. Cordie Kigar led off with a base hit. After Drew Miller reached on an error, Andrew Mathes drove in both runs with a double. Mathes later scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.

A walk to Ben Shannan followed by a base hit by Jacob Blessing set the stage for the return of Brock Bondurant. The senior made his first plate appearance of the year, after being cleared by doctor's in his recovery from shoulder surgery. The team's designated hitter drilled a single to right field to plate a run. After a walk to Tyler Buford loaded the bases, Jacob Hull came through with a two-run single to make it 7-0.

That was more than enough scoring for pitcher Ben Shannan. The senior hurler kept the Midgets in check through the first four innings before finally allowing a pair of runs in the fifth when the game was well out of reach. Shannan held Putnam County to five hits and walked four while striking out 12 in five innings of work to pick up the win.

SCR-I tacked on three runs in the second inning. Mathes led off with a walk. A base on ball to Shannan was followed by a hit from Blessing to load the bases. Bondurant again delivered an RBI single. A run scored on a wild pitch before Buford made it 10-0 with a sacrifice fly.

Three errors in the third helped Scotland County further pad the cushion, scoring four more runs with the aid of just one hit, a two-run single by Blessing.

The Tigers continued to pour it on, tacking on five in the top of the fifth to make it 19-0. Brice Cowell had an RBI single and Mathes drove in two more runs with a base hit.

The victory sent the Tigers to 13-1 on the season and 5-0 in the TRC. Putnam County fell to 3-11 and 1-3 in the conference.

Mathes led the offense, going 2-2 with four RBIs and three runs scores. He walked twice and was hit by a pitch. Blessing was 3-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Bondurant went 2-2 in his return with two RBIs.
