Roller coasters are notorious for their ups and downs, but always end on time. Scotland County softball fans got all the thrills of an amusement park ride on September 4th in Queen City, and then received the added benefit of extra innings before the Lady Tigers ultimately pulled out a 3-2 victory filled with plenty of thrills.

The contest got off to a rather pedestrian start, as neither team mounted any offense in the first two innings.

SCR-I struck first in the top of the third inning. With one out, Megan Creek singled. She moved into scoring position on a base hit by Randi Slaughter. Creek crossed the plate on a groundout by Bethany Rader to make the score 1-0.

Creek worked out of a jam in the third inning after a pair of walks put a runner in scoring position. She stranded a pair of runners in the fourth after the SCR-I defense committed two errors.

Scotland County tacked on a run in the top of the fifth. With two outs, Slaughter singled. She stole second base and came in to score on a base hit by Rader to make it 2-0.

The Rams pulled even in the bottom of the sixth. A double plated the first run before a pair of SCR-I errors allowed the home team to knot the score at 2-2.

That's where the score remained through regulation, as neither team could plate a run, forcing extra innings.

Creek retired the side in the bottom of the seventh inning and worked around a one-out single in the eighth.

SCR-I pulled ahead in the top of the ninth. With one out, Claire Shannan singled. A base hit by Katie Howard set the table for Creek, who delivered an RBI single. A walk to Rader loaded the bases, but Howard was thrown out at the plate trying to advance on a passed ball to end the inning.

The lone tally proved to be plenty, as Creek retired the side in order in the bottom of the frame to preserve the 3-2 victory.

The senior picked up the win, allowing two runs, one earned, in nine innings of work. Creek gave up six hits and walked two while striking out five.

Rader went 204 at the plate with two RBIs. Slaughter and Creek were both 2-5 with a run scored.

The Lady Tigers improved to 2-2 on the season with the victory.
