Rader Grounds Eagles in Key Conference Battle

Bethany Rader dominated Knox County, shuting out the Eagles on just three hits.

The team that scores the most runs, always wins a softball game. On Tuesday night in Memphis, it was Scotland County's pitching and glove work that took much of the load off the offense.

Junior Bethany Rader shutout Knox County in front of a flawless effort by her team's defense en route to a 2-0 win over the pre-season favorites to repeat as league champions.

Scotland County played error-free ball behind Rader, who surrendered just three hits and a pair of walks in seven innings of work.

The lone scoring threat happened in the second inning. A one-out walk, was followed by a passed ball by the catcher. The runner moved to third on a ground out but was stranded.

That made the job much easier for the bats, who were tasked with the difficult job of solving Knox County's Rachel Poston.

She worked through back-to-back walks in the first inning, retiring 10 of the next 11 batters in order.

That all changed in the bottom of the fifth.

Claire Shannan led off the inning with a base on balls. Shaye Wright followed with a base hit. After a walk to Megan Creek loaded the bases, Shannan came in to score when Randi Slaughter reached on an error. A base hit by Rader plated the second run and loaded the bases, but the Lady Tigers were unable to push any more runs across.

The 2-0 lead proved more than enough for Rader, who fanned the last two batters of the contest to seal the shutout. She recorded seven strikeouts on the night.

Wright went 2-3 on the night with a double. Rader was 1-2 with a walk and an RBI and Shannan was 1-2 with a walk and a run scored.

Scotland County improved to 6-3 on the season.
