Talented Tandem Leads Warriors to Win Over SCR-I

Scotland County got to see a pair of top Iowa talents on Saturday evening as Van Buren came to Memphis for a border battle in varsity basketball.

The Warriors prevailed 70-62 in a shoot out as Will Mertens and Thomas Fitzsimmons combined for 49 points for the visitors.

Fitzsimmons did the heavy lifting early on for the Iowa squad as he had 10 first quarter points. That helped Van Buren pull ahead 15-13 despite four points each from Jacob Blessing and Lucas Howard.

Three-pointers by Blessing and Jacob Hull were not enough to prevent a Van Buren run in the second quarter. After a scoreless first period, Mertens got intot he act. The freshman can a pair of three-pointers en route to 11 points in the period. That helped Van Buren outscore the Tigers 22-10 to lead 37-23 at the break.

Mertens continued his hot shooting from behind the arc, connecting on two more three-pointers.

SCR-I matched the shooting as Cordie Kigar hit twice from behind the arc. Blessing also hit a three-pointer and Brice Cowell came alive with seven points as SCR-I trimmed the lead to 57-44.

Howard picked up the scoring in the final period, pouring in nine points but it was not enough as Mertens and Fitzsimmons closed out the night with a combined 11 points down the stretch to finish off the 70-62 win.

Mertens topped all scorers with 26 points. Fitzsimmons added 23 points.

Howard led Scotland County (4-5) with 16 points. Blessing finished with 12 points and Cowell added 10 points.
