Local Coops to Send High School Juniors to Washington D.C.

A pair of area utility cooperatives are taking applications from high school juniors to participate in a pair of leadership conferences to be offered in Washington D.C.

Tri-County Electric Cooperative of Lancaster, Missouri is once again sponsoring their Cooperative Youth Conference & Leadership Experience (CYCLE) July 17-19, 2013 in Jefferson City.

High school juniors whose parents are members of Tri-County Electric are eligible to participate.

Applicants must complete all information forms plus an essay of 500 to 1,000 words in length on the topic "What is an electric cooperative, how do they operate and how they have benefited their members.?"

One student will be selected to attend the Youth Tour trip to Washington, D.C. June 14-21, 2013 and three alternates will be selected to attend the leadership conference in Jefferson City.

For more information contact Kevin Wheeler, Tri-County Electric at 888-457-3734 or contact high school guidance counselor Brent Bondurant for forms. The application deadline is March 29, 2013.

NEMR Telecom is also sponsoring a trip for an area high school junior to spend five days in Washington, D.C, free of charge. The Foundation for Rural Service 2013 Youth Tour is scheduled for Saturday, June 1 through Wednesday, June 5.

Through this experience, students will gain a first-hand look at the telecommunications industry and government process, as they spend four days visiting famous historical sites.

NEMR Telecom will pay all expenses. Students will be chaperoned by NTCA staff and volunteers from member phone companies. After the trip students will be asked to present a five-minute report sharing their experience at the annual NEMR Telecom meeting in September.

Applicants must be 16 or 17 years of age and their parents must be customers of NEMR Telcom.

Applications may be obtained by contacting Tammy Childers at 660-874-4111. Along with the application, students prepare a one page essay on: "Why Should I Be Chosen for the FRS Youth Tour".
