Charles and Venita Green Scholarships Awarded at Truman State University

Two scholarships honoring Charles B. and Venita Jean Green were recently awarded at Truman State University.

Logan Ford of Glenwood, and Destinee Mullinix of Downing, each received the Charles B. and Venita Jean Green Scholarship in the amount of $3,500.

Charles was born on a farm south of Downing in Scotland County. He attended Walnut Grove Rural School, graduated from Downing High School and attended Truman State University (then Northeast Missouri State Teachers College) for two years before entering the Army.

He served in active combat and landed on Utah Beach, France immediately after D-Day. Charles was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and four Bronze Stars. He was discharged Oct. 7, 1945, with the rank of 1st Sgt.

After the war, Charles returned to the farm where he was born. He was married to Venita Jean Childress of Granger, on June 14, 1970. She graduated from Truman with a master's degree in education in 1964. She passed away Aug. 21, 2004 at the age of 74. Charles passed away Sept. 7, 2009 at the age of 92.

The scholarship fund was created in 2010 with an estate gift of $525,000 to enable serious students from Scotland and/or Schuyler counties to attend Truman.
