Local Walking Program Starts April 2nd
Come join us in the fight against heart disease, diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure and colon cancer. Exercise and a healthy diet are two of the best ways to protect yourself against many chronic diseases. The Scotland County Health Department, in partnership with the Scotland County Fitness Center, is sponsoring an eight week pedometer walking program at the Fitness Center.
You do not need to have a fitness center membership to participate in the walking program, which starts at 5:30 p.m. on April 2. Prior to the start date, anyone interested in participating will need to contact Laurie Jack at the Health Department at (660) 465-7275 to sign up and make arrangements to get your pedometer. At that time, your stride will be calculated.
Participants will meet weekly at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday's at the Fitness Center to walk one mile and tally everyone's weekly steps. Each individual will have their weekly trip progress displayed on the Missouri map wall at the Fitness Center. It is 335 miles to Branson, approximately 12,000 steps a day. Each participant should wear their pedometer all day and record their steps on a tally card each evening.
There is an activity equivalency sheet which will give the mileage for so much time doing a specific activity. Remember to keep track of that also. Individuals are to then bring their card on Thursday's to add up their mileage.
Any participant who "makes it to Branson" will be entered in a drawing to win a 6 month single membership to the Fitness Center. The drawing will happen on May 28, if you cannot attend the first night, please sign up anyway.
Come and join the fun, it's never too late to get in shape!
