Passenger Halts Truck After Debris Renders Driver Unconscious

A passenger helped avoid a serious accident on Highway 15 in Scotland County on Friday morning after flying debris knocked a driver unconscious.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the incident occurred at 10:45 a.m. on May 24th, four miles north of Memphis.

Theodore J. Bellon, 66, of Mt. Sterling, IA, was northbound on Highway 15 in a 2013 Ford F-150. A southbound 2011 Peterbuilt driven by Stacey Y. Zimmerman, 23, of Cantril, IA, reportedly crossed the centerline and struck the driver's side mirror on Bellon's pickup. Debris from the mirror broke the driver's side window and struck Bellon, rendering him unconscious. A passenger in the truck was able to stop the vehicle without further incident.

Officers from the Memphis Police Department and Scotland County Sheriff's Office reported to the scene. The semi did not stop at the accident scene and was located near Baring and notified of the accident during a traffic stop by the sheriff's office.

Bellon was transported to the Scotland County Hospital by EMS workers. He was treated for minor injuries.
