Donations Needed for Tiger Pack Program to Provide Weekend Meals to Needy Students

With school starting just around the corner, the locally supported Tiger Pack program will soon be gearing up to provide weekend meals for preschool and elementary children in Scotland County.

Last year the Tiger Pack program provided nutritious meals on weekends throughout the school year for over 90 children from Scotland County R-I and Gorin R-III elementary schools as well as the local HeadStart program.

"Once again, local support is needed for the continuation of this program," said volunteer Dan Hite. "Churches and other local organizations are asked to consider donating peanut butter (16-oz jars) and saltine crackers which are given out monthly to each child. These items are always in demand."

Hite noted that financial support is also needed to provide other staple food items for the Tiger Packs. Monetary donations are preferred over other types of food donations to assure uniformity in the Tiger Packs and because local merchants have worked with the program on keeping down food costs as items are bought in bulk for the program. That said, food donations are welcome, but please purchase individual serving sizes for distribution among the individual Tiger Packs.

Tiger Pack distribution will begin Friday, August 30th, following the first full week of school. Questions you may have about the program should be directed to Dani Fromm of Scotland County R-I Elementary at 465-8532 or to Dan Hite of the Scotland County Ministerial Alliance at 465-2142 or (660) 216-6364.

The Food Bank for Central And Northeast Missouri recently has sent out letters throughout Scotland County seeking donations for their regional "Buddy Pack" program. They would like it to be known that this was an administrative oversight on their part and all money donated by Scotland County residents to the Food Bank's "Buddy Pack" program will be forwarded to the local "Tiger Pack" program. The Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri applauds the local efforts and apologizes for any confusion this oversight might have caused.
