Dr. Kice-Briggs Elected Trustee at A.T. Still University

KIRKSVILLE - The A.T. Still University (ATSU) Board of Trustees met July 26-27, 2013 in Newport, RI, to elect new members and appoint officers at its quarterly meeting.

The new board members are Lisette Dottavio, PhD, CPA, of Stephenville, Texas; Tisha Kice-Briggs, DDS, of Kirksville, MO; Paulina Vazquez Morris, JD, MBA, MHSA, of Phoenix, Ariz.; Ann Thielke, RN, JD, of Houston, Texas; and Gary Wiltz, MD, of Franklin, La.

Kice-Briggs is a graduate of Scotland County R-I High School.

"We are pleased to welcome each extremely talented and accomplished new Board of Trustee member to the University. ATSU's ongoing contribution to health professions education and America's healthcare is assured with the strength and diversity of its Board of Trustees," said ATSU President Craig Phelps, DO, FAOASM, '84.

Dr. Kice-Briggs, a partner with Kirksville Dental Group, has practiced dentistry in Kirksville, MO, for 11 years. Originally from Memphis, MO, Dr. Kice-Briggs received her bachelor of arts in biology and doctor of dental surgery degrees from University of Missouri-Kansas City. Currently, Dr. Kice-Briggs is a trustee on the Missouri Dental Association Board. She and her husband, David, an attorney with Briggs & McClamroch in Kirksville, have twin boys, Isaac and Adrian.

Dr. Dottavio is a senior tax accountant with Boucher Morgan & Young in Stephenville, Texas. After earning her bachelor of arts degree in physical geography and biology from SUNY Buffalo, master of arts degree in physical geography from the University of Colorado, and her doctorate in satellite technology from Purdue University, Dr. Dottavio continued her education at Ohio State University and became a certified public accountant. She currently works with corporate clients, high-wealth individuals, and non-profit organizations specializing in tax compliance, planning, and business growth. Dr. Dottavio has been actively involved in higher education for more than two decades focusing on institutional advancement, student life, and teaching.

Morris has a distinguished career in both public service and private industry. Most recently she sought election to the United States Congress in Arizona's 3rd Congressional District. Prior to her campaign, Morris served as deputy director and general counsel for the Arizona Department of Administration. She also served as an elected board member to the Maricopa County Special Health District. Morris earned both her bachelor of arts and juris doctor degrees from the University of Arizona in Tucson. She continued her education with distinction garnering master degrees in business and health administration at Arizona State University.

Thielke is senior vice president, general counsel, compliance officer, and corporate secretary of VHA Inc. Prior to joining VHA in 2012, Thielke served as vice president and general counsel for St. Luke's Episcopal Health System in Houston. During her tenure with the system, it expanded from two to six hospitals. Thielke has a bachelor's degree with honors in nursing from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Wash. She obtained her law degree with honors from Ohio State University College of Law in Columbus. In 2009, Thielke became certified in health law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.

Gary Wiltz, MD, is chief executive officer of Teche Action Clinics, a network of federally qualified community health centers based in Franklin but with a total of eight sites in southwest Louisiana. These clinics provide one-stop shopping for people with limited access to care, primarily the uninsured and underinsured. The clinics serve 20,000 people a year, offering primary and preventive healthcare services including pediatrics, ob/gyn, family medicine, internal medicine, dental, mental health, pharmacy, and social service programs. The clinics also provide primary care training to medical students interested in rural health.

Dr. Wiltz and the Teche Action Clinic are frequently referred to as the model for the state of Louisiana and possibly the nation, for delivery of healthcare in a community health center setting. While his service and recognitions are far too many to name, some include Medical Director of the Year by the Louisiana Primary Care Association and the prestigious Community Health Leadership Award from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Later this month Dr. Wiltz will assume the position of chair of the board of directors for the National Association of Community Health Centers. Dr. Wiltz received his education at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans.

The following continuing board members were appointed as officers: G. Scott Drew, DO, FAOCD, '87, of Marion, Ohio, is chair; James Cannon, DHA, PA-C, MS, '97, of Chesapeake, Va., is vice-chair; and Dorothy M. Munch, DO, '85, of Poplar Bluff, MO, is secretary.

"As chair, I am excited our board has five new diverse individuals energized and engaged to further the vision of ATSU and advance the mission of our University," says Dr. Drew.

Members named to serve on the Audit Team include: Robert W. Uhl, chair, of Paradise Valley, Ariz.; Stanley E. Grogg, DO, FACOP, FAAP, '71, of Tulsa, Okla.; and James Cannon, DHA, PA-C, MS, '97, of Chesapeake, Va.

The following will also continue their service on the Board: Manuel C. Bedoya, DMD, of Tucson, Ariz.; Daniel L. Biery, DO, FACOI, FACG, FASGE, '72, of Phelps, N.Y.; Reid W. Butler, JD, of Phoenix, Ariz.; Chester W. Douglass, DMD, PhD, MPH, of Newton, Mass.; Clyde H. Evans, PhD, of Needham, Mass.; Robert L. King, JD, of Lexington, Ky.; Isaac R. Navarro, DMD, '08, of Visalia, Calif.; and Ronald W. Winkler of Kirksville, MO The Board of Trustees is comprised of 18 members.

The next board meeting is scheduled during Founder's Day, October 25-26, 2013, in Kirksville, MO.
