HUBERT CRAIG SMITH
(3/16/1924 - 2/27/2013)

Hubert Craig Smith, 88, of Kirksville, Missouri, formally of rural Memphis, passed away after a short illness on February 27, 2013 at Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville.

Craig was born March 16, 1924 to Hubert and Anna June (Craig) Smith. He was born in the same house his daddy was born in. He attended Oak Forest School thru the 8th grade. He had a lifelong interest in history, especially the American Civil War and continued to read and study for the rest of his life.

He served in the military during World War II, but never talked about it much. The most he would talk about was hitching rides home while on leave.

On April 10, 1955 he married Myrtle Marie Woods, the daughter of Louie E. & Edith (Rorabaugh) Woods, and to this union two children were born, Debra Ann, December 25, 1955 and David Craig, October 19, 1960.

Craig farmed with his Dad and eventually took over the farming operation. Craig and Myrtle farmed row crops and raised hogs. He loved his piggies and always had a dog or two on the farm.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers-in-law, and a sister-in-law.

He is survived by his wife Myrtle; his two children, Debra Smith of Kirksville, and David and Crystal (Steeples) Smith of Gentry, Arkansas; two grandchildren, Jason Shelton (Becky) of Osceola, Iowa, and Kaylene Campbell (John) of Gentry, Arkansas; four great-grandchildren; and his sister, Helen Mallett of Anamosa, Iowa.

Craig was a good friend and neighbor, a good father and husband. He was a good man and will be missed by all that knew him.

Funeral services were held Sunday, March 3, 2013, at the Payne Funeral Chapel in Memphis, Missouri, with Pastor David Barton officiating. Music was provided by Joe Fulk. Pallbearers were Mark Monroe, Rex Winn, Ervin Nolt, Jimmie Winn, and Wayne Winn. Honorary bearers were Bob Garret and Richard Briggs.

Memorials were suggested to the Concord Cemetery Association, and can be left at or mailed to the Payne Funeral Chapel, 202 East Madison St, Memphis, Missouri 63555.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Payne Funeral Chapel, Memphis, Missouri.
