JOAN PHILLIPS-CECIL
(3/5/1928 - 5/14/2013)



Joan Phillips-Cecil, 85, of Memphis, Missouri, died May 14, 2013, at Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville, Missouri. She was born on March 5, 1928, in Arbela, Missouri, to Marvin Irvin and Delcie Mae Phinney Fulk. She was a 1945 graduate of Granger High School after which she attained a teaching certificate and briefly taught at a country school. She married Paul Stewart Phillips on December 14, 1947, at Memphis, Missouri and to this union five children were born. Joan and Paul lived on a farm in Arbela for many years where she enjoyed fishing, gardening and cooking. Paul passed away July 6, 1983. Joan worked as a waitress and was a dispatcher for the Clark County Sheriff Department. In 1988, she attained a degree in interior design through a correspondence program. She married Marvin Cecil on June 30, 2001, at Donnellson, Iowa. He passed away June 13, 2002. Throughout her life, Joan loved to play cards, go dancing and bake cakes and pies for friends and family. She was well known for selling cosmetics and enjoyed meeting new people. Joan was a member of the Presbyterian Church, the Jauflione Chapter of Daughters of American Revolution and Red Hats. She is survived by her five children: Beverly Ann Yow and her husband, Clive, of Phoenix, Arizona; Robert Steven Phillips and his wife, Sara Jo, of Memphis; Susan Diane Miller and her husband, Glen, of Memphis; James Leslie Phillips of Memphis and Mary Elizabeth Schnelle of Elizabethtown, Kentucky. Also surviving are nineteen grandchildren: Bobbi, Sandra, Cindy, Tara, Kimberly, Shawn, Brandi, Patrick, Pamela, Jennifer, Andrew, Michelle, Rob, Becky, Katie, Melissa, Paul, Ashley and Ryan; one step-grandson, Clifford; thirty-six great-grandchildren; two great-great- grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Twila Fulk, of Memphis; and a brother-in-law, Junior Phillips of Memphis. She was preceded in death by both her husbands, two sisters: Loretta Fulk and Avanel Malone and two brothers: Wayne Fulk and Wilbur Fulk. A memorial service was held at the funeral home on Monday, May 20th at 2 P.M. with Brother Larry Smith officiating. Music was provided by Joe and Lori Fulk, vocalists and Ann Luther, pianist. Burial of cremains followed the service in the Memphis Cemetery. Honorary bearers were Vera Gray, George Gray, Patricia Gibson and Pat Malone.
