MARILEE SHOGREN (3/3/1930 - 7/1/2013)
Marilee Shogren, age 83, of Manhattan, Kansas, died Monday morning, July 1, 2013, at the Via Christi Village in Manhattan.
She was born on March 3, 1930, in Orrick, Missouri the daughter of Cliff and LaVanchie (Eggleston) Drake. Marilee was raised in Memphis, Missouri where she attended local schools. She graduated from high school in Chicago, Illinois.
Marilee attended nursing school and was a nurse for a number of years while living in Missouri and Indiana.
She moved to Manhattan in 1960 where she went to work as a bookkeeper for the accounting firm of Van Valkenburgh-Yonning and Sink. She was employed with that firm for 25 years. In addition to her bookkeeping career, she was also a wonderful homemaker.
Marilee was a member of the First Christian Church. She enjoyed gardening and painting and was a gifted organist. Marilee also loved animals, especially her pet cats and Pug dog. She also enjoyed fishing and traveling throughout the country with her husband and family. One of her biggest gifts was her care and support for those who needed a friend or a shoulder to lean on. She was a loving, strong and meticulous lady.
On December 13, 1974, in Manhattan, Kansas, she was united in marriage to Merle D. Shogren. He survives of the home. Also surviving are her four children: Jim Hartigan, Manhattan, KS; Patricia "Tish" Collins and her husband Todd, Clay Center, KS; Jeff Hartigan, Manhattan, KS; and Greg Paul Gilman, Wichita, KS. Five grandchildren: Crystal, Johnny, Justin, Joshua and Bret and four great grandchildren: Kaily, Jamere, Raziel and Alan Michael.
Marilee was preceded in death by her parents and by her brothers and sisters.
Memorial services will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, July 5, 2013, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel with Reverend Ben Duerfeldt officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery in Manhattan.
