David Dewayne Bechtel, 51, of Milton, Iowa, died of injuries sustained in a multi-car pile-up on Interstate 10 during a dust storm between Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona, Tuesday afternoon, October 29, 2013.
David was born November 2, 1961, at Kirksville, Missouri, to Orville Dewayne “Buddy” and Jewel Marie Meeks Bechtel. He grew up in the Milton, Iowa area and graduated from Fox Valley High School in Milton, Class of 1980. David was united in marriage to Donna Lynn Curry on May 21, 1988 at the First Christian Church in Memphis, Missouri and to this union two daughters were born.
David worked at Keith’s Café in Memphis while in school and was also a driver for Pepsi-Cola in the Edina, Missouri area. He was the owner and operator of a freight truck, spending many hours on the road and was a proud member of the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association. David was devoted to his mother and his two daughters were his greatest joy. David was a very compassionate man, always willing to lend a hand.
Surviving are his daughters: Amanda Alise Bechtel and Alaynah Mikhail Bechtel, both of Centerville, Iowa; his significant other, Tresa Gibson, of Tucumcari, New Mexico; two aunts: Nancy June Barnes of Edina, Missouri and Donna Meeks of Memphis, Missouri; an uncle, Perry Richard Meeks and his wife, Ruth, of La Mesa, California; many cousins and many, many friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, his parents, his step-father, Ed Skelton, an uncle, Hollis Meeks, an aunt, Virginia Meeks and his trucker buddy, Lance Peterson.
Visitation will open after 9:00 AM on Thursday, November 7, 2013, with the family present to greet relatives and friends from 5 until 8 PM at the Memphis Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 8, 2013 at 2:00 PM at the funeral home with Sonny Smyser, Pastor of the Schuyler County Church of Faith, officiating. Burial will follow in the South Prairie Cemetery in rural Van Buren County, Iowa. Casket bearers will be Philip Gaffney, Alan Henderson, Neil Howard, Ricky Hogg, Doug Meeks, Brock Meeks, Greg Shelley, and James Walker. Honorary bearers will be Charles Downing and Theo Peterson.
To honor David’s memory, a memorial may be made for the South Prairie Cemetery and may be left at or mailed to the Memphis Funeral Home, 378 South Market Street, Memphis, Missouri 63555.
