Linn County Rides Big First Inning to 8-3 Win Over SCR-I
A rough first inning did in the Tigers on the road Tuesday night as Linn County handed Scotland County its first loss of the 2013 baseball season.
The Mustangs took advantage of three walks and a pair of SCR-I errors to plate four runs in the bottom of the first inning and erase a 1-0 deficit en route to an 8-3 victory on April 2nd in Purdin.
The Tigers went ahead 1-0 to start the game. Jacob Blessing led off the game with a base on balls. He stole second and third base and scored when Tyler Buford reached on an error.
But Linn County rallied in the bottom of the frame off starter Austin Thrasher.
The Tiger hurler rebounded in the second frame, retiring the side in order.
SCR-I trimmed the deficit to 4-2 in the top of the third. Cordie Kigar singled. Thrasher followed with a bse hit and Kigar came in to score on a ground out by Buford.
But the Mustangs put the game away in the bottom of the third, scoring four times courtesy of four hits and three walks, ending Thrasher's day on the mound.
Kigar took over in relief and blanked the Mustangs over the final three innings, allowing two hits and a walk while fanning two in three innings of work.
Thrasher's line was three innings pitched with eight runs allowed, just four earned, on four hits and seven walks. He struck out three Mustangs.
SCR-I plated its final run in the top of the fourth. Mason VanHoozen walked to start the rally. Marcus Jenkins singled him in to scoring position before Kyler Burkhiser delivered an RBI single to make the final score 8-3.
Thrasher was 2-4 at the plate. Burkhiser went 1-3 with an RBI. Buford was 0-4 but drove in two runs.
