Jackson, Swearingen Power Tigers to Win in District Opener

Chris Jackson and Landyn Swearingen powered the Tigers to a win in the district opener.

A pitcher's duel through four innings turned into a blowout late as Scotland County's bats came to life in the team's final at bats of the Class 2 District 6 opener on Saturday in Edina.

Chris Jackson and Landyn Swearingen delivered the key blows as SCR-I erased a 1-0 deficit en route to an 11-2 win over Schuyler County.

The Rams went ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning as Austin Thrasher walked in a run. The Tigers hurler struggled with his control much of the afternoon, walking eighth batters, but showed big game poise as he was able to work out of several jams and limit Schuyler County to just two runs over six innings of work.

Trailing 1-0 in the top of the fifth, the Tigers sent eight batters to the plate, and tallied three runs. Jackson led off the rally, reaching on an error. After a walk to Jacob Hull, Swearingen delivered an RBI single to tie the game. Marcus Jenkins and Mason VanHoozen reached on Rams' errors allowing the go ahead run to score. Cordie Kigar plated the third run with an RBI single.

The Rams came right back in the bottom of the frame, taking advantage of an SCR-I fielding miscue to trim the Tigers' lead to 3-2.

But SCR-I put the game away in the top of the sixth.

Jackson again fueled the rally with a base hit. After Hull was hit by a pitch, Swearingen cracked a double to drive home Jackson. Jacob Blessing and Tyler Buford had base hits during the big inning that saw SCR-I record 12 at bats. Jackson capped off the seven-run explosion with a two-run single to make the score 10-2.

The Tigers tacked on an insurance run in the seventh. Swearingen reached on an error. After a base hit by Jenkins, Blessing came through with an RBI single to make the final score 11-2.

Kigar pitched the final inning to nail down the victory for the Tigers.

Thrasher tallied the win on the mound, holding the Rams to just one hit while striking out nine.

Swearingen was 2-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Jackson also went 204 for 2 RBIs. Blessing was 2-5 with an RBI.

SCR-I advanced to take on top seed Canton on Monday night. Knox County defeated Putnam County 6-4 in the other opening round game. The Eagles advanced to play #2 seed Milan in the other semifinals matchup on Monday. The district championship game is set for Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Knox County High School in Edina.
