Lady Tigers Open 2013 Softball Season in Grand Fashion
Bethany Rader crushed a grand slam homerun to lead the Lady Tigers to a 10-1 win over Clark County.
The 2013 softball season got off to a grand start, literally, as senior Bethany Rader crushed a grand slam home run that helped fuel a 10-1 rout of rival Clark County in the Lady Tigers 2013 premiere.
The two squads locked in a pitchers' duel early on with Rader and Clark County's Jessica Roberts quieting the bats early on.
Senior Kailey Roberts reached Rader for a single in the bottom of the first but the Lady Tigers' hurler easily worked out of the inning.
After going 1-2-3 in the bottom of the first, SCR-I mounted its first threat in inning number two. Freshman Abi Feeney collected SCR-I's first hit of the year, an infield single. She moved into scoring position on a base knock by Hailey Dial before J. Roberts worked out of the jam.
After a pair of two out hits in the top of third, Claire Shannan gathered a pop fly in foul territory to close out the Indians threat in the top of the third.
SCR-I took control of the game in the bottom of the frame.
Miranda Holland led off with a single. Randi Slaughter reached on a fielder's choice before Olivia Harris was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After fouling off several pitchers, Rader drove a full-count pitch over the fence in left center field to put SCR-I ahead 4-0.
The Lady Tigers looked poised to add to the lead. Brieanna Priebe followed with a base hit and Dial added her second single of the night before a walk to Shannan again loaded the bases. But Roberts was able to work out of the jam and keep the Indians in the game.
Rader retired seven straight batters before a two-out walk in the fifth.
In the bottom of the frame, the bats went back to work for Scotland County.
Dial led off with a walk. After a single by Shaye Wright, Holland delivered an RBI double to make the score 5-0. Slaughter plated a run with an RBI single before Harris drove in a pair of runs with a base knock. Rader capped off the big inning with an RBI single making the score 9-0.
Clark County tallied its lone run in the top of the sixth inning courtesy of a pair of base hits.
Rader closed out the complete game victory with a pair of strike outs to open the year 1-0. She allowed one earned run on six hits and walked just one while striking out seven.
She had a huge game at the plate as well, going 2-3 with 5 RBIs and a home run. Holland was 2-4 with an RBI and two runs scored while Harris went 1-2 with two RBI.
The Lady Tigers (1-0) travel to South Shelby and Novinger this week before entering the Knox County Tournament on Saturday.
