Burkhiser Bombs Bury Raiders in Lady Tigers Conference Opener

Even with a hand in her face, Chelsea Burkhiser was on fire Tuesday night in Shelbyville, draining four three-pointers to pace the Lady Tigers to the win.

It was bombs away on Tuesday night in Shelbina. Scotland County connected on a season-high eight three-pointers en route to a 51-33 victory over North Shelby in the Tri-Rivers Conference opener for both teams.

Scotland County's defense did the dirty work in the first period, holding the home team to just three points. SCR-I topped that tally in the opening minute as Mazy Gray scored on a drive to the basket and freshman Calesse Bair made a free throw. Kassie Bulen hit a jumper to make the score 5-3.

Chelsea Wood had a pair of buckets in the paint and Randi Slaughter converted on the fast break to push the lead to 11-3 at the end of the first frame.

Chelsea Burkhiser caught fire in the second period. The junior forward canned three three-pointers as the Lady Tigers blew the game open. Sophia Hoskinson converted a pair of offensive rebounds and Maddie Brassfield knocked down a long jumper as Scotland County opened the period with a 9-0 run.

Abi Feeney also connected from behind the arc before a jumper by Gray made the score 31-9 at the intermission.

Burkhiser drained another three pointer to open the third period, but Scotland County's offense cooled off after that. A pair of buckets by Kylee Johnston were the only other field goals for SCR-I as the home team trimmed the deficit to 40-20.

Hoskinson and Wood each had buckets in the paint and Brassfield made SCR-I's final three-pointer of the night as SCR-I rolled on to the 51-33 win.

The Lady Tigers extended their winning streak to four straight and improved to 4-1 on the season. Burkhiser led the way with a season-high 12 points. Wood finished with nine points on a night that saw all 10 SCR-I players get into the scorebook.
